Maia Sandu has begun her working visit to Rome. The President of Moldova was welcomed by the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, at Palazzo Chigi. Subsequently, the two officials had a discussion focused on the European prospects of the Republic of Moldova, on the developments of Russian aggression in Ukraine, and on the condemnation of recent massive attacks, which have also violated Polish airspace, reports IPN.
“I have reaffirmed Italy’s full support for Chisinau, most recently demonstrated by the conclusion of agreements on social security and the recognition of driving licenses,” said Meloni.
President Maia Sandu also met with the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa. The discussions focused on strengthening the partnership between Moldova and Italy in the economic, development and security sectors, as well as cooperation in support of European peace and stability.
“The bond between our states is strengthened by the numerous diaspora, respected here for their work, integrity, and contribution to the Italian economy,” asserts Maia Sandu.
Russa and Sandu have welcomed the entry into force of the bilateral Agreement on social protection and the Agreement on the conversion of driving licenses. The first document guarantees that Moldovans who have worked in Italy will receive a pension for the years worked there, regardless of whether they choose to stay in Italy or return home. The agreement related to licenses allows the recognition and exchange of Moldovan documents, including those that will be issued in the future.
Another topic of discussion was the cooperation to ensure the integrity of the electoral processes in Moldova, including the vote of the diaspora in Italy, and to counteract attempts at foreign interference.
The head of state, Maia Sandu, is making a working visit to the Italian Republic and the Holy See from September 10th to 12th, announces the Presidency. Maia Sandu will have a meeting with the Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, and will be received in audience by Pope Leo XIV. The discussion at the Holy See will provide an opportunity for an exchange of views on promoting peace, solidarity and Christian values in a world marked by multiple challenges, communicates the Presidency.
