Macron in Chisinau: “The EU is not the USSR. We respect Moldova’s sovereignty”

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, delivered a strong message of support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova during a joint conference with the leaders of Germany, Poland, and Moldova, held on the occasion of Independence Day. Visiting Chisinau, Macron emphasized that Moldova belongs to the “European family” and that modernization efforts will continue to be supported by France, reports IPN.

“Moldova matters, and that is why we are here today. Its future is in Europe, in the European Union, where it has already found its place,” said Emmanuel Macron, adding that his presence in the capital of the Republic of Moldova is a gesture of solidarity and confidence in the country’s democratic future.

Macron highlighted the determination with which the authorities and citizens of the Republic of Moldova have committed to the European integration path, noting that the reforms already implemented—in justice, administration, and the economy—are remarkable and have led to the first disbursements under the Growth Plan.

“Accession to the European Union represents a historic opportunity for Moldova. It means prosperity, security, infrastructure modernization, and real opportunities for youth and the economy. France will stand by Moldova at every stage of this journey—providing technical expertise and financing priority projects to improve citizens’ lives. We will continue to cooperate in the areas of energy, natural resources, and infrastructure,” said the French President.

At the same time, Emmanuel Macron criticized external pressures and anti-European propaganda coming from Russia, stating that the European Union is a project of peace and respect for the sovereignty of nations, unlike Russia. “Kremlin propaganda claims that Europeans want to prolong the war, which is false—it is lies. Unlike Russia, the EU threatens no one and respects everyone’s sovereignty.”

“While just a few hundred kilometers from Chisinau, the war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine continues to wreak havoc, it seems extremely important to me to emphasize that European integration is a clear choice for Moldova, in favor of peace and the rule of law,” stated Emmanuel Macron.

“The European Union is by no means the Soviet Union,” concluded the French President.

In the context of the high temperatures during this period, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations urges citizens to be cautious while resting near aquatic basins. Rescuers recommend swimming only in specially arranged and lifeguard-supervised places. It is strictly forbidden to enter the water while intoxicated, as well as leaving children without the constant supervision of an adult, reports IPN.

IGSU also recommends avoiding swimming at night, in unfamiliar places or in areas with strong currents. At the same time, people are urged not to suddenly enter the water after they have spent a long period in the sun.

Rescuers suggest parents discuss with their children the rules of behavior near aquatic pools and not allow them to play dangerous games in the water. According to IGSU, adherence to these measures can prevent the occurrence of tragedies.
