Iran warned Romania on Monday that making its military bases available to the US could be interpreted by Tehran as participation in a military aggression against the Islamic Republic. The statement was made by the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, IPN reports with reference to the London-based Iran International television station.
In a press conference, the Iranian official stated that such a decision by Bucharest would be unacceptable from the perspective of international law and could entail Romania’s international responsibility. According to him, Iran will respond accordingly, both legally and politically.
The warning comes after Romania approved last week a US request to temporarily deploy refueling planes, equipment and troops to the country in the context of the war in Iran. President Nicusor Dan said the equipment is strictly defensive in nature and will be deployed based on the strategic partnership between the two states.
