American military forces, temporarily stationed in Romania, with the approval of the Parliament

The Parliament of Romania approved on Wednesday the temporary deployment of some military equipment and forces of the United States of America on Romanian territory. The decision was adopted with 272 votes in favor, 18 against and 5 abstentions, reports IPN.

The plenary debates were tense. Representatives of the opposition interrupted with whistles and chants the speech held by the leader of the Social Democratic Party, Sorin Grindeanu. The leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, George Simion, stated that his party will not support the request, claiming that Romania is being “pushed into war”. Neither did the representatives of the Young People’s Party vote for the proposal.

The Minister of Defense, Radu Miruta, accused the opposition of spreading disinformation, while Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that important decisions must be made responsibly, not “with vuvuzelas”.

Before the vote in the plenary of Parliament, the defense committees of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate approved the resolution that allows the temporary presence of some American military capabilities at the “Mihail Kogalniceanu” Air Base.

On Wednesday, after the Supreme Defense Council meeting, President Nicusor Dan stated that the measure targets air refueling aircraft and satellite communication equipment, with a defensive nature.
