Gagauzia could become an advantage for the entire Republic of Moldova, and the relations between Comrat and Chisinau must be built on respect, law, and dialogue. The statement belongs to the former deputy, Fiodor Gagauz, who urged the central authorities to stop treating the region as a problem.

In a press conference at IPN, the politician, who announced that he will run for the position of governor, stated that the future of Gagauzia cannot be built on confrontation and lack of trust. According to him, the relations between Comrat and Chisinau must be based on the respect of the region’s rights and on cooperation.

Addressing the central authorities, the politician stated that the inhabitants of Gagauzia should not be viewed as adversaries. “Stop viewing Gagauzia as a problem. Stop making the Gagauz people enemies. The Gagauz have always been and remain patriots of this state. We have no other homeland. The Republic of Moldova is our common home. Just like all citizens, we want a strong, independent and prosperous Moldova,” declared Fiodor Gagauz.

According to him, respecting the rights of the region does not weaken the state, but contributes to its strengthening. “I am convinced that Gagauz autonomy can become an advantage for the entire country. The time has come to capitalize on this potential together,” said the politician.

Fiodor Gagauz stated once more that adherence to the law and dialogue between Comrat and Chisinau should not be viewed as concessions, but necessary elements for the stability, unity, and development of the Republic of Moldova.

“I believe in the Gagauz people. I believe in Gagauzia. I believe in Moldova. We cannot change everything that has happened in recent years, but we can decide together what Gagauzia will be like tomorrow,” the politician affirmed.

Journalists, civic activists, and integrity whistleblowers will benefit from new guarantees against abusive legal proceedings, initiated to intimidate or silence them. The Parliament voted in the final reading the bill on combating abusive legal proceedings against public mobilization, known as SLAPP, reports IPN.

The project, developed by the Ministry of Justice, introduces mechanisms for the quick identification and rejection of abusive actions. These will be examined as a priority and on an emergency basis, and the law on freedom of expression will include criteria that will allow courts to determine whether an action has a SLAPP character.

According to the authors, SLAPP procedures are characterized by an imbalance of power and resources between the plaintiff – usually a public figure, a politician, or a corporation – and the defendant.

Upon the defendant’s request, the court may require the plaintiff to post a bond to cover estimated court costs and any potential damages. The person concerned will be exempt from the state fee and stamp duty, and victims will benefit from specific remedies.

If the court finds the action to be abusive, the plaintiff risks a fine ranging from 1,000 to 250,000 lei. Penalties are also provided for cases where influential people use state authorities, including the police, to sanction or harass journalists.

The new provisions will come into effect 12 months after the law is published in the Official Gazette.

The authorities have condemned the violation of the airspace of the Republic of Moldova by Russian drones, in the context of the attacks launched by Russia on Ukraine. President Maia Sandu stated that Russia’s war endangers the whole of Europe, reports IPN.

“The massive Russian attack on Ukraine has reached Moldova again this morning: four Russian drones have violated our airspace, and at least one has exploded in the north. Russia’s war endangers all of Europe. We condemn this war and stand with Ukraine,” Maia Sandu mentioned.

In turn, the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, condemned the violations of the airspace and said that these represent a direct risk to the security of the Republic of Moldova and a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

The official has asked citizens to remain calm and vigilant, and to respect the recommendations of the authorities. Igor Grosu urged the population to immediately notify state institutions if they identify suspicious objects. The President of the Parliament also emphasized the need for state institutions to act in a coordinated manner and to strengthen their capabilities for monitoring and protecting the airspace.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges the Russian Federation to immediately cease attacks on Ukraine and any action that threatens the security of the Republic of Moldova and its citizens.
