The airport in Catania, the busiest in Sicily, has suspended all flights at least until 06:00 PM local time, due to the intense activity of Mount Etna. The measure was taken after massive emissions formed an ash cloud of approximately 4,500 meters altitude, reports IPN.
Following the suspension of activities, several flights have already been redirected to the Palermo airport. Passengers are urged by the airport administration not to show up at the terminal without checking the flight status in advance.
According to the latest bulletin from the Volcanic Observatory, strong ash emissions are ongoing, the phenomenon being constantly monitored. The Italian Civil Protection Department raised the alert level for Etna, the most active volcano in Europe, from green to yellow on June 26, due to the intensification of seismic movements.
