All over 100 social support programs will be continued and extended, Ion Ceban

All the over 100 social support programs initiated for children, families in difficulty, persons with special needs and older persons from Chisinau will be continued and extended, said incumbent mayor Ion Ceban, who is contending for a new term in office. The leader of the Party “National Alternative Movement” (MAN) said that no other locality in the country offers such complex support in the social sphere and healthcare and programs in the fields of child protection, social assistance and many others, IPN reports.

In a news conference, the candidate said that despite the crises, the municipality managed to maintain the social support provided to a number of residents of Chisinau, including cold-month allowances and free transport for a number of beneficiaries.

“As long as we are supported and hold the mayoralty, the MAN team will keep this social support for the categories of citizens who travel free of charge. Pensioners, primary school children and many other categories, 18 in total, will continue travelling free,” stated Ion Ceban.

According to him, the MAN team will continue and extend the medical services and assistance, including the provision of eyeglasses, hearing aids, prostheses, glucometers, etc.

“We will continue working to create social infrastructure accessible to persons with special needs, such as ramps, adjusted information and others. We will set up day centers friendly to older persons where these persons could spend the time usefully and will open new municipal learning centers for grownups, by the example of the center we have in Râșcani district. The demand is very great,” stated the election contender.

“We aim to further support the families and children so as to help them overcome the difficult situations and to offer assistance to adults and children with disabilities. We intend to make 2024 the year of support policies and programs and of improvement of infrastructure and living conditions, of assistance for persons with special needs.”

In a public message at the end of his term, the former Minister of Finance, Andrian Gavrilita, wrote that he accepted the position to promote reforms that he considered necessary for the Republic of Moldova, even though he was aware that they would not be popular. He argues that the role of a minister involves more than economic decisions and negotiations with external partners, being a “deeply political” one, exercised in a “very complex and even hostile” environment, reports IPN.

Gavrilita admits that he made mistakes during his term, but says that one of the biggest challenges was trying to promote one of the most difficult reforms during a complicated period for governance. He claims to have been left with “a bitter taste” after the experience lived in the public space, criticizing the spread of false information both on social networks and in the media.

The former minister appreciates that the time spent on social networks, including by public officials, contributes neither to economic development nor to increasing the efficiency of the administration.

In conclusion, Andrian Gavriliță asserts that he will continue his work in support of the Republic of Moldova, regardless of the position he will hold. He maintains that the economy needs to be transformed from one based on consumption to one oriented towards investment, and public services must be centered on citizens. At the same time, the former minister wished success to the members of the new governmental team.

Andrian Gavrilita was part of the Government led by Alexandru Munteanu and was one of the promoters of the fiscal reform project for the year 2027. The proposed package, which includes changes to the VAT and the taxation and social contributions system, has generated criticism from the business environment, farmers, and unions, and the Government has withdrawn the project for additional consultations.
