The leaders of Romania’s political parties — PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR — held talks on Friday with the head of state, Nicusor Dan, regarding the structure of the future government. An agreement was reached on appointing a political prime minister. However, UDMR did not agree with the proposed rotating premiership, IPN reports.

Kelemen Hunor, the leader of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), stated in an interview with Agerpres that political discussions will continue on Monday, June 2, and reiterated the need for a coalition agreement, which could be signed in the coming period.

“It is necessary to have a detailed agreement, and we need to prepare that next week. This effort requires everyone’s involvement to identify any nuances or areas where we might not reach an understanding, at the specialists’ level. After that, if needed, we will move to the political level. This was the main part of the discussion, because if we manage to outline the directions of action and a governance project, then it will be easier to proceed and settle the other details,” said Kelemen Hunor.

Regarding the future government formation, the UDMR leader clarified that no specific candidate for prime minister was discussed; the only agreement was that the prime minister will be a political appointee.

“By the end of next week, we should have outlined the government program or at least those aspects on which everyone agrees, so that politically we can have a unified approach. But I believe that next week these details can be discussed if we truly want a coherent and detailed program and a viable, cohesive coalition,” concluded the UDMR leader.

After the discussions, Romania’s President Nicusor Dan stated that he hopes the new government will be formed “within two to three weeks.”

Negotiations to form a new government in Romania began on Wednesday, May 28, just two days after Nicusor Dan officially took office as head of state.
