The daily life of Chisinau’s inhabitants during the interwar period was presented in an exhibition at the Municipal Library “B.P. Hasdeu”. The panels on display invite visitors to discover the spirit of the city through period photographs and fragments from the texts of current publications.
Mariana Harjevschi, General Director of the Municipal Library “B.P. Hasdeu”, Mariana Harjevschi, said that the exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to see moments of urban life, how a person reads the newspaper and its content. Cultural events, sports events, races from the interwar period are also reflected.
Visitors can turn their eyes to a tailor’s shop to see what was being sewn for men and women, and at what prices.
An object from the interwar period is on display at the exhibition. It is a wardrobe from the family of the director of the host library, which completes the picture of the inter-war city.
The administrator of Heritage 21 Foundation, Alexandru Corduneanu, reported that the exhibition captures the spirit of Chisinau at that time, representing various facets of the interwar city, the first interwar educational institutions, such as the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. There are also fashion and everyday life panels.
„There are 20 panels that represent Chisinau in some cut-outs made by us, so that we can emphasize and highlight the spirit of Chisinau, which was the second city in Greater Romania and was in competition with all the other cities in terms of development,” said Alexandru Corduneanu.
Chisinau changed significantly between 1918 and 1940, from a sleepy city to one that sparkled, buzzed and shouted with joy, added the administrator of the Heritage 21 Foundation.
The exhibition organized by the Heritage21 Foundation, in partnership with the Municipal Library “B.P. Hasdeu”, is based on old and rare documents from the collections of periodicals, books and scientific journals. The event is part of an interwar city festival from March 27 to December 1.
