Harsher penalties for non-giving of way to pedestrians and cyclists

The drivers who will not give legal way to pedestrians or cyclists face fines of up to 1,800 lei and five penalty points. If the same violation is committed again during the same year, the fine will rise to 2,500 lei and the person will be banned from driving for a period of 30 to 45 days. This is provided in a bill that was adopted by Parliament, IPN reports.

At the moment, the non-giving of way to pedestrians or cyclists is punished with a fine of 900 to 1,500 lei and four penalty points. The new fines take effect within three months of the publication of the bill in the Official Gazette.

The penalties for speeding were also harshened. If the legal speed limit is exceeded by 40km/hour, the fine will be 1,500 to 1,800 lei and five penalty points will be imposed. Going faster by 60-80 km/hour over the legal limit will be punished with a fine of 2,250 to 2,500 lei and ban on driving for a period of 30 to 45 days, by 80 km/hour and more – 3,750 to 5,000 lei and ban on driving for a period of 60 to 90 days. The penalties for similar violations committed in the course of the same year were also made harsher.

Under the new provisions, driving of a vehicle that is not registered as required or is not subject to technical overhaul will be punished with a fine of 460 to 600 lei, but without imposing the three penalty points.

For not respecting the priority road signs, markings to give way on the roadway, the drivers will be warned or will be fined 500 to 600 lei and will get two penalty points. Until the new provisions take effect, the penalty will be a fine of 750 to 1,500 lei and three penalty points.

For stopping or parking in banned places, drivers face the same fine as now – 900 to 1,500 lei – but the four penalty points will no longer be imposed.
