President Donald Trump has notified the US Congress that the war with Iran has ended and that he will not seek legislative approval to continue the conflict, citing the current ceasefire instituted on April 7. US legislation requires the president to obtain the consent of Congress or to cease hostilities within 60 days of initiation, reports IPN.
Some members of the Senate and House of Representatives argue that the president is overstepping his authority if he prolongs the conflict and that an explicit vote is needed in each chamber for approval. Others believe that the 60-day term expired on April 7, the date the armistice was established.
Meanwhile, despite the armistice, tensions remain high. The Strait of Hormuz is still under blockade, as are the Iranian ports. The authorities in Tehran have sent the United States a new peace negotiation proposal, which was not to the liking of the leader at the White House. Trump described the Iranian authorities as being very confused after the loss of some important military leaders in the war.
The conflict in the Middle East has so far resulted in thousands of deaths and immense material damage, and has triggered a global economic crisis against the backdrop of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The price of oil has fluctuated massively, influenced by each military development or political statement. Quotations slightly depreciated on Friday to about 108 dollars for Brent crude and 101 for WTI crude.
