The Jewish Community of Moldova expresses concern about the new history textbook

PRESS RELEASE

The Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova expresses concern about the new history textbook and invites the press to a press conference

The Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova, represented by Mr. Alexander Bilinkis, President, Mr. Roman Rabinovici, PhD in History, and Mrs. Aliona Grossu, Director of the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova, invite the press and interested public to a press conference to be held tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at IPN News Agency, mun. Chisinau, sec. Centru, str. Teatrului str-la, 2/2.

The event will address the major concerns of the Jewish community and experts about the way the history of the Holocaust is reflected in the new history textbook for grade XII, published under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova. Following a detailed analysis of the textbook’s content, several serious historical and methodological problems were identified, including:

  • Distorted presentation of the Antonescu regime’s role in the Holocaust, including the use of outdated and biased sources, which attempt to minimize its responsibility in the deportation and extermination of hundreds of thousands of Jews and Roma.
  • Omission of key aspects of the Holocaust in Bessarabia and Transnistria.
  • Unjustifiably equating the Holocaust with other historical tragedies, which leads to relativizing the gravity and uniqueness of this genocide.
  • Inappropriate and manipulative expressions that create confusion about historical events and those responsible for them.

These issues were also raised by external partners and experts in the field, who expressed concern about attempts to minimize or distort the historical truth about the Holocaust.

We believe that historical education must be faithful to the truth and reflect the conclusions of the international scientific community. Any form of historical revisionism or mitigating the responsibility of regimes that committed crimes against humanity is unacceptable.

We welcome representatives of the media and all interested parties to tomorrow’s conference to discuss these issues of crucial importance for collective memory and responsible education.

Users from several countries reported connection issues with Facebook on Sunday. The number of reports rapidly increased during the morning, suggesting a possible widespread malfunction, according to the Downdetector platform, quoted by IPN.

According to reports in the international press, users are experiencing difficulties with authentication, loading the news feed, and using some features of the social network. It is not yet clear whether other services of the Meta company are also affected.

In Moldova, there are issues with browser connectivity, but access through the application is possible. Until this time, Meta company has not provided an explanation for the cause of the incident nor a timeline for its resolution. In the absence of an official confirmation, the exact extent of the disruption remains unclear.

The Downdetector platform monitors online service interruptions and centralizes user reports and other data regarding their functionality. A sudden increase in notifications usually indicates the existence of a technical problem.
