Moldovan judoka Victor Sterpu has won the bronze medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. The athlete climbed the podium after four victories in the 81 kg weight category, reports IPN.
Victor Sterpu has defeated Magamed Borchashvili from Austria, Dimitri Gochilaidze from Georgia, Gadzidavud Gasanov from Bahrain, and Timo Cavelius from Germany, notes the National Olympic and Sports Committee.
In the semifinals, the judoka from the Republic of Moldova was defeated by the future winner of the competition in this weight category, the Canadian François Drapeau.
The Abu Dhabi tournament took place from November 28th to 30th.
Victor Sterpu is the first judoka to bring a European senior title to the Republic of Moldova, winning the gold medal at the European Championship in Prague, in 2020, in the 73 kg category. Among his most significant achievements at the senior level are the gold title won at the Zagreb Grand Prix (2024), in the 81 kg category, as well as multiple bronze medals at prestigious tournaments in the Grand Slam series.
