A painting by Vincent van Gogh sold for 62.7 million dollars at a auction at Sotheby’s in New York. The 1887 work, titled Piles de romans parisiens et roses dans un verre (Piles of Parisian Novels and Roses in a Glass), sold for 35% above the estimated value, reports IPN.
Van Gogh’s painting, which depicts a stack of books on a table, sparked a fierce seven-minute competition between Sotheby’s specialist Simon Shaw, dealer David Nahmad, and art historian Patti Wong. The latter made the winning bid.
At the same auction, a self-portrait of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was sold for nearly 55 million dollars. This transaction broke three records – the highest amount paid for a work by Kahlo, for a work by a Latin American artist, and for a work created by a woman.
