The conduct of elections for the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia based on the proportional electoral system was discussed by President Maia Sandu with deputies from Comrat. The discussions focused on the application of a uniform electoral system throughout the country, in accordance with the recent decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the competencies of the UTA Gagauzia, reports IPN.

According to the Presidency, some members of the People’s Assembly present at the meeting supported the proposal for the regional vote to be organized according to the proportional model applied at the national level.

The President of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, Valentin Gaidarji, stated after the meeting that the representatives of the region will discuss with the entire body of deputies from Comrat the issues addressed at the meeting with the head of state. He pointed out that the dialogue between Chisinau and Comrat continues and that there is a common understanding on some topics, without providing details.

According to the Presidency, the Constitutional Court’s decision establishes that the electoral system must be uniform throughout the territory of the Republic of Moldova and approved by organic law by Parliament, in accordance with the country’s status as a unitary state.

The institution specifies that the Court’s decision is final and binding for all authorities. The Parliament is set to urgently review a project to amend the Electoral Code, so that the elections for the Gagauz People’s Assembly can be organized this autumn based on the new provisions.

The consultations between the central authorities and the representatives of Gagauzia will continue on Tuesday, with the participation of the mayors from the region.
