Retailers are being urged to begin preparing for the beverage container return scheme, which will become operational in January 2027. They will need to set up dedicated space, train staff, and adapt their checkout and record-keeping systems, IPN reports.

In addition to installing equipment for collecting returned packaging, retailers will be required to inform consumers about the new regulations and incorporate the handling of returned packaging into their stores’ daily operations. Retailers will receive compensation, subject to the stipulated conditions, for the costs incurred in storing the packaging.

Under the government decision, stores with a retail floor area exceeding 100 square metres that sell products covered by the Packaging Deposit System (SDA) will be required to participate in the scheme and arrange for the collection of packaging returned by consumers. Retailers that are not required to set up a return point are encouraged to join the SDA network voluntarily.

Depending on the facilities at each location, containers may be collected manually or through automated reverse vending machines. The SDA will allow customers to return eligible beverage containers and reclaim the deposit paid when purchasing the product. The scheme will cover glass, plastic and metal beverage containers with capacities ranging from 0.1 to three litres, with a deposit of approximately two lei refunded for each container returned.
