The Transnistrian administration is considering penalizing pedestrians who cross the street illegally – outside pedestrian crossings or at the red light of the traffic signal. The legislative body of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian Moldovan Republic is set to examine a bill that will allow traffic inspectors to identify pedestrian offenses using images captured by traffic surveillance cameras, reports IPN.
According to statistics, pedestrians are responsible for approximately 17% of the road accidents recorded in the region.
The Vice President of the Supreme Soviet, Galina Antiufeeva, stated that the initiative was developed following numerous requests from citizens and drivers, who complain that pedestrians often cross the street in prohibited places, creating dangerous situations in traffic, while the entire responsibility falls on the drivers.
The project envisages the tightening of pedestrian responsibility for traffic rule violations, by introducing the possibility of photo and video documentation of the offenses committed by them.
