Four people have died in Spain due to the floods caused by the torrential rains brought by storm Adam. In some localities, the precipitation exceeded 60 liters per square meter in 48 hours, the highest level in nearly 40 years. Five provinces are under a weather alert, and Valencia and the Balearic Islands are under a red code warning, reports IPN.

In Valencia, torrential rains have reached up to 70 liters per square meter in some areas, and floods have isolated several coastal towns. Approximately two thousand people were urgently evacuated, and local authorities have set up special areas for those in need of shelter.

Initially, local authorities issued a home isolation order for 145 localities where around 900 thousand people live, later, the number was reduced to 8 cities. Approximately 100 thousand students stayed home on Monday, schools being closed due to flooded or landslide-blocked access roads. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez asked the population from the affected areas to avoid any movement and to stay on the upper floors of the buildings.

At the same time, the Meteorological Service of Catalonia has warned that severe weather will persist, especially in coastal areas. Meteorologists have issued three warnings, depending on the intensity of the forecasted precipitation in the coastal areas, as well as in the Pyrenees Mountains. According to them, the rains could cause a sudden and significant rise in the levels of some rivers.

In this context, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned Romanian citizens who are, transit, or intend to travel to the province of Valencia or the Balearic Islands about the red code for heavy rainfall. Romanian citizens are urged to follow the information and recommendations of local authorities, to exercise caution, especially in areas exposed to the risk of flooding, and to avoid unnecessary travel in areas affected by intense weather phenomena.
