Dozens of people gathered in the Great National Assembly Square for the 25th edition of the National Wine Day, which brings together 114 wineries from the Republic of Moldova this weekend. One of the central moments of the event was the establishment of a Guinness record for the largest human image of a vine, formed by about 500 people, reports IPN.

The participants recreated grape clusters, leaves, branches, and roots of a vine through their positioning. The record was confirmed by the Guinness World Records representative, Pravin Patel.

At the opening of the event, the director of the National Office of Vine and Wine, Stefan Iamandi, mentioned that this year’s edition marks a quarter of a century in which the celebration has evolved along with the viticulture sector. “During this period, the National Wine Day has become a history book of our winemaking,” he said.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan stated that the vine and wine represent one of the main elements of identity for the Republic of Moldova. “Every country, especially a small one, looks for reasons for pride and things that unite us, that identify us – for us the answer is simple – we are a country whose identity is closely tied to the vine and wine,” noted the head of the executive.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Eugeniu Osmochescu, said that vine growers and winemakers have contributed to the formation of national identity, just like the Romanian language. The official mentioned that the sector has gone through numerous challenges in the last 25 years and emphasized that Moldova ranks first in the world in terms of vineyard density.

Present at the event, the European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification, Valdis Dombrovskis, stated that Moldovan wine is a source of pride, tradition, and success, the result of the work and passion of the producers. According to the European official, through wine, the Republic of Moldova attracts tourists and gets closer to the EU.

The 25th edition of the National Wine Day is taking place on Saturday and Sunday in the Great National Assembly Square. The program includes tastings, lessons at the Wine School, guided tours by sommeliers, and performances.
