The fisheries sector in the Republic of Moldova is set to record significant growth in the coming years: local fish production will be tripled by the end of 2028, according to the draft of the Strategic Program of the Aquaculture Sector for 2026-2030, which is now under public consultation, reports IPN.

According to the document, this goal will be achieved by increasing the number of authorized and modernized enterprises by 25% and by expanding the area dedicated to aquaculture by 35% by the end of 2027.

The program establishes the priority directions for the development of a competitive and sustainable fisheries sector, which contributes to the country’s food security. Over the next two years, at least 25% of the degraded fish basins will be rehabilitated, and the infrastructure will be strengthened to support the increase in production.

The document also provides for the restoration of two fish nurseries and the use of certified genetic material in at least 30% of fish farms by 2028, which will enhance the quality and resilience of the sector.
