The judicial control over the former head of the Parliament’s Legal Department, Ion Creanga, has been extended by 60 days. The defense requested that the restrictions imposed by the judicial control not be limited only to Chisinau, but to allow the defendant’s movement throughout the country, however, the court did not admit this request, reports IPN.
The accused did not appear at the court hearing, citing health issues. The defense submitted medical documents indicating an unsatisfactory condition, however, the court found that these do not clearly prove the impossibility of attending the meeting, lacking an explicit medical conclusion in this regard.
The case prosecutor, Dumitru Stefirta, stated that a clear medical certificate is needed, issued by a specialist, indicating whether the defendant can attend sessions. At the same time, the prosecutor pointed out the defense’s contradiction: on one hand, they claim that the defendant cannot appear in court for medical reasons, on the other hand, they assert that he could travel outside of Chisinau to manage a household, which, in the prosecutor’s opinion, is incompatible.
Creanga’s lawyer, Iurie Florea, stated that the extension of the measure is common in such cases, but it would not be necessary here, as the defendant does not pose a risk of evasion. According to the defender, the client intends to participate in the sessions and has not requested the case to be examined in his absence.
The next court hearing was scheduled for April 3, at 10:00 AM. The court warned that, in the absence of conclusive medical documents, the defendant’s absence could be deemed unjustified.
Ion Creanga is accused of treason and conspiracy against the state. According to prosecutors, during the period of 2023-2024, he allegedly maintained correspondence and clandestine meetings with an assistant to the military attaché of the Russian Federation Embassy in Chisinau. The former head of the Legal Department of the Parliament was detained in July 2024, when he allegedly received 500 dollars from a Russian official.
The case was recently restarted from scratch after the presiding judge, Arina Ialanji, resigned. The new judge assigned to the case is Veaceslav Cernalev.
