The freedom of the mass-media and the protection of journalists are among the key commitments undertaken by the Republic of Moldova within the first group of negotiation chapters “Fundamental Values”. According to the Bureau for European Integration, this cluster aims at strengthening the state institutions, justice, and citizens’ rights, reports IPN.
Moldova assumes and continues the justice reform, the integrity check of judges and prosecutors, as well as the consolidation of institutions responsible for law enforcement. Also, measures are provided for the protection of human rights and combating discrimination.
Another objective involves strengthening democratic institutions and electoral processes. According to the IBE, the state aims to combat vote buying, misinformation, and external influences on elections, while also ensuring a broader participation of citizens in the decision-making process.
The first cluster envisages the reform of public administration, the modernization of the public procurement system, and the improvement of public funds management. At the same time, the authorities commit to continuing economic reforms to prepare the national economy to face competition in the European market and to attract more investments.
Among the commitments are also the strengthening of cooperation with European institutions in the field of security, border management, and combating organized crime. Furthermore, Moldova requests gradual inclusion in the activities of EU agencies and programs prior to accession, in order to accelerate the adoption of European standards and approach to community institutions.
