The country’s leadership has sent congratulatory messages on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Officials have highlighted the dedication, courage, and strength of women, and appreciated the contribution of women in the family, community, and society, reports IPN.

In a social media post, President Maia Sandu stated that “Moldova is stronger, thanks to the courage, dedication, and work of women.”

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu said that there is no need for a single day in the calendar for a woman to be appreciated, but that March 8th is an occasion to express, with more warmth, how much they matter. The Prime Minister emphasized that every woman should be appreciated not only for her roles in society, but also for what she builds through her own talent, work, and ambition. “A modern society is one where people succeed on their merits, and women have the freedom and opportunity to follow their path as they wish,” Premier Munteanu pointed out.

In turn, the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, stated that this holiday is about the rights won by women and those that still need to be defended. “It is important that every girl in Moldova knows that she has the right to equal opportunities and that she can dream without limits,” added the head of the legislature.

International Women’s Day, officially marked since the 20th century, has its origins in the movements for women’s rights. Proposed in 1910 at the Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, the celebration of March 8th was officially recognized by the UN in the 70s, celebrating the role of women in family and society.
