The Comrat Territorial Office of the State Chancellery has challenged the decision of the Gagauzia Popular Assembly, which set the date for elections in the Comrat legislature, as well as the composition of the Central Electoral Commission in the region. The institution maintains that these actions contravene the Constitution and national legislation, and exceed the competencies of the autonomous body, reports the IPN correspondent from Gagauzia.
The territorial office emphasizes that these actions contravene the Constitution and national legislation, exceed the competences of the Gagauz People’s Assembly, and are not in accordance with the Electoral Code, which stipulates that the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia can be constituted, but not the Central Electoral Commission.
On March 17, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia approved the composition of the autonomy’s electoral body and set the elections for the People’s Assembly on June 21.
The Supreme Court of Justice has suspended the decision of the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia regarding the establishment of the Central Electoral Commission in Comrat, considering the term “CEC Gagauzia” illegal. According to the law, the body officially bears the name “Electoral Council of Gagauzia”.
The Ministry of Justice has also appealed to the Constitutional Court requesting to verify the compliance of the Law on the special legal status of Gagauzia, including the duties of the governor and the right of the People’s Assembly to form the electoral body. However, the deputies insist on organizing the elections based on local legislation, ignoring the new provisions of the Electoral Code.
