After a closed session that lasted more than six hours today, Parliament’s Legal Commission postponed until Tuesday the hearing of prosecutors’ request to strip MP Ilan Shor of parliamentary privilege.
Commission chair Olesea Stamate said no official statements will be made until then.
Today the Commission heard from the acting Prosecutor General Dumitru Robu and other prosecutors involved. Ilan Shor was formally notified, but no response followed. His lawyers were allowed to attend though.
Responding to complaints that Shor’s lawyers weren’t given access to the materials presented at the hearing, Stamate said that, per the procedure, only the Commission members and Shor himself were allowed full access.
“It was a closed hearing, partly because the Prosecutor General requested it. The presented materials could contain sensible information on other Shor group members as well, not just on Ilan Shor. So, we’re talking about protected information here, which cannot be disclosed as long as the investigation is ongoing”, said Stamate.
After the hearing is concluded, the Commission is expected to return a verdict by holding a secret vote.
On Thursday, prosecutors requested that Shor be stripped of immunity from criminal proceedings, including arrest and prosecution, on nine separate charges. They include fraud and money laundering in particularly large amounts, creation or leading of a criminal organization, perjury, embezzlement, and abuse of office, among others.
