Brussels realizes that the justice sector reform and the annihilation of organized crime networks cannot take place overnight, said Romanian MEP Ramona Strugariu. According to her, the European institutions understand that many of the reforms undertaken by the Republic of Moldova necessitate time. The official noted that the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on Thursday is a signal of support for the Republic of Moldova before the publication by the European Commission of the final assessment report, IPN reports.
On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution by which it requests to open the EU-Moldova accession negotiations by the end of this year. The document was adopted by a broad majority – 448 votes “for”, 45 votes “against” and 43 abstentions.
“The European Parliament’s resolution represents powerful and unconditional support for the European course of the Republic of Moldova. We adopted this resolution not accidentally. We must open the accession negotiations by the end of this year. It is a powerful signal before the European Commission presents its repot and before the European Council decides the next steps for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine,” Ramona Strugariu stated in the program “Parallel 47” on Radio Moldova station.
According to the official, the Republic of Moldova has made progress in implementing a part of the conditions put forward by the European Commission. The justice sector reform is a long-lasting process and the European Commission will take into account the made efforts and the consistency of the official Chisinau’s actions in this area, not necessarily the full reformation of the system.
“The justice sector reform, the priorities of the Republic of Moldova to create effective anticorruption institutions, transparency and good governance are areas in which progress has been seen. But we explain that results in the fight against corruption, in annihilating organized crime networks, in doing the justice sector reform to ensure a generation of upright persons cannot be achieved overnight. There are member states that continue making efforts in this regard. Surely, the assessment will depend on this, but I don’t think that someone expected that everything will be done perfectly and irreversibly overnight. I believe the consistency of efforts and the consecutiveness with which things are continued will be rather analyzed,” said the Romanian MEP.
By the European Parliament’s resolution, the MEPs also asked to increase the financial and technical support for the Republic of Moldova and the number of persons who deal with the Republic of Moldova at European institutions, and to also permanently liberalize trade between Moldova and the EU.
