The Republic of Moldova has reaffirmed its strong commitment to actively contribute to the consolidation of democracy, rule of law, and European unity, in the context where it will take over the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in November. This message was conveyed by President Maia Sandu during her meeting in Strasbourg with the Secretary General of the organization, Alain Berset, reports IPN.

The discussions of the two officials also aimed at strengthening cooperation through the Action Plan of the Republic of Moldova – Council of Europe and the adoption of new measures for the defense of democracy and increasing resilience against external interference.

The head of state highlighted the contribution of the Council of Europe, including the Parliamentary Assembly, the Venice Commission, and the European Court of Human Rights, to the democratic development of Moldova and the strengthening of the rule of law. At the same time, Maia Sandu reaffirmed the commitment to continue reforms, especially in justice, in accordance with the expectations of citizens and the requirements for accession to the European Union.

The Republic of Moldova will hold the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, during the period of November 2025 – May 2026.

During the official visit to Strasbourg, President Maia Sandu had a series of meetings with high-ranking officials of the European Union. The head of state delivered a speech to the plenary of the European Parliament and met with the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and security policy, Kaja Kallas, as well as the leaders of the main European political groups.
