Over a thousand positions within the National Police remain vacant due to the moratorium established back in 2017. The information was presented by the head of the General Inspectorate of Police, Viorel Cernauteanu, during hearings organized by the Parliamentary Committee for National Security, Defense and Public Order, reports IPN.

According to Viorel Cernauteanu, there are currently 1,054 vacant positions registered in the system, but these cannot be filled due to the fact that approximately 1,100 positions are under moratorium. “We are not talking about a real staff shortage, but about positions that formally exist but cannot be filled,” stated the head of the IGP.

Viorel Cernauteanu also spoke about the main security challenges that the police faced over the past year. Among the most common types of fraud identified are the theft of money from bank accounts, investment pyramids, and scams of the “relative involved in an accident” type.

The head of the IGP mentioned that the war in Ukraine continues to generate major risks for the Republic of Moldova, such as illegal migration, drug and arms trafficking, energy crisis, cyber attacks, disinformation campaigns etc.
