Over 20,000 women were screened as part of the National Cancer Control Program 2016-2025, launched at the initiative of the Oncology Institute, in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Chisinau. As a result of the examinations, 178 cases of breast cancer and 497 cases of benign or precancerous pathologies were confirmed, reports IPN.
Over 75% of cases were detected at an early stage, which allowed for early treatment and significantly increased the chances of recovery.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Ministry of Health reaffirms its commitment to supporting women by ensuring access to specialized medical services, in partnership with medical institutions and international partners.
Breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer in women in the Republic of Moldova, with an incidence that is on the rise. In 2024, over 1,200 new cases were diagnosed, and in total, over 11,000 women are living with this diagnosis.
The late detection rate, of approximately 34.8%, represents a major cause for concern, having a direct impact on the effectiveness of the treatment and on the prognosis of the patients.
In the Republic of Moldova, four regional centers for early detection of breast cancer are operating:
– Chisinau: Republican Medical Diagnostic Center
– Balti: Balti Clinical Hospital
– Ungheni: Ungheni Health Center (which also covers the districts of Nisporeni, Calarasi, and Falesti)
– Causeni: Causeni District Hospital.
In these centers, women benefit from free counseling and information regarding breast health, imaging investigations, guidance to the reference center within the Oncology Institute, in case of suspicions.
In addition to self-examining the breasts in front of the mirror and regular medical screening, every woman over 30 should have a breast ultrasound at least once a year. After reaching the age of 40, it is also recommended to have a mammogram, performed once every 2-3 years.
