One in four Moldovans is over 60 years old, which represents a high level of demographic aging. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the proportion of elderly people is increasing, and women represent over 60% of this population category, reports IPN.
According to BNS, the population aging coefficient has reached approximately 26%, and compared to the beginning of 2024, the indicator has increased by 0.7 percentage points. Among women, the coefficient is over 29%, and for men – 22%.
At the same time, the differences between women and men become more pronounced with advancing age. At the beginning of this year, there were 66 men for every 100 women among people aged at least 60. In the category of 85 years and over, the ratio drops to 35 men for every 100 women. At the same time, at the age of 60, women have an average life expectancy of about 21 years, compared to 16 years for men.
In terms of income, at the beginning of this year, the average retirement pension was 4,435 lei. Men received an average pension of 4,964 lei, while women – 4,162 lei, the difference being over 16%. At the same time, the number of economically active people aged 60 and over decreased by over 11%, down to 87.3 thousand.
Regarding the standard of living, the average monthly income of households with elderly people was 5,161 lei per person. The difference between the urban and rural environment exceeds 1,700 lei: 6,198 lei in the city compared to 4,460 lei in the countryside. On average, a household with elderly people spent 4,421 lei per month per person. Almost half of the expenses were allocated to food.
