MEP Olesea Stamate will be excluded from the Committee on Legal Affairs, Appointments and Immunities. The decision was taken by the PAS faction. Stamate was listed as a member of the Public Finance Control Committee, IPN reports.
Today, Olesea Stamate announced that she is leaving the PAS faction and will continue her work as an unaffiliated MEP.
According to the MP, given the PAS leadership’s decision to exclude her from the party and the way in which institutional relations have evolved in recent days, she is withdrawing from the PAS faction.
“I will continue my work with respect for the mandate entrusted to me by the citizens and in full compliance with the rule of law principles,” wrote Stamate.
The MP also said that, as she said earlier, she believes that all her actions were in accordance with the law and were taken in full transparency.
Olesea Stamate was expelled from the party after the scandal sparked by the release from prison of dangerous criminals sentenced to life imprisonment, which became possible after an amendment to the amnesty law proposed by the MP but supported by several PAS MPs.
The amendment allowed, in particular cases, to commute life imprisonment to 30 years in prison and then, through another procedure, to cumulatively request from the court the early release or the replacement of the unserved part of the sentence with a milder penalty in more favorable conditions for these convicts.
Following these releases, Olesea Stamate was excluded from the PAS, while the head of the National Administration of Penitentiaries Anatolie Falca tendered his resignation.
Parliament on April 4 gave two readings to a legislative initiative that stipulates that people whose sentence was commuted from life imprisonment to 30 years in prison can no longer ask the court to reduce their jail term. The law was published the next day in the Official Gazette. At the same time, at the request of the Prosecutor General, the Constitutional Court on April 9 suspended the application of the provisions that allow the commutation of the life sentence to 30 years behind bars.
