Olesea Stamate responded to the accusations made by the parliamentary opposition, according to which political prisoners reappeared in Moldova, making reference to the case of ex-President Igor Dodon. The head of the Parliament’s legal commission said the prosecution service only fulfills its duties, not as it did during the tenure of Stoianoglo, when decisions were taken according to political criteria. Olesea Stamate noted she expects the case of Dodon will be completed, but in strict compliance with the law, IPN reports.
In a speech at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Socialist MP Vasile Bolea said that political prisoners reappeared in the Republic of Moldova after 2019, making reference to the case of ex-President Igor Dodon. For their part, representatives of the government said political were the actions of ex-prosecutor general Alexandr Stoianogl, who ignored the images in the famous “kuliok” case.
“Legal action should have been taken based on that video as it represented reasonable suspicion of the commission of an offense. The absence of sufficient proofs or of sufficient witnesses is another question, but a criminal case should have been started. It was a political decision indeed. Now the prosecutor’s office started to work apparently,” Olesea Stamate stated in the talk show “Résumé with Ileana Pîrgaru” on RliveTV channel.
She said she considers the court’s decision to extend the period of house arrest for Igor Dodon is correct as there are risks the ex-President can influence witnesses, can leave the country and can destroy evidence.
“Also, there are reasons for starring new criminal case against Igor Dodon besides the one for which he was placed under house arrest, including the Bahamas case. There are many episodes and the prosecutors have a lot of work to do. As all the citizens, I want to see an end result with an equitable solution based on the law in this case,” stated Olesea Stamate.
Ex-President Igor Dodon is accused of treason, acceptance of financing for the party from a criminal organization, passive corruption and unjust enrichment. He denies any wrongdoing and considers that this is political revenge taken by the PAS government.
