The Republic of Moldova produces approximately 23,000 tons of walnuts in shell annually, grown on an area of about 18,000 hectares. The country also remains among the world’s leading exporters, ranking 11th globally in walnut exports and 9th in walnut kernel exports, with shipments worth approximately $41.5 million, according to IPN.
The development of the walnut sector was discussed at a conference marking the 20th anniversary of the Moldovan Walnut Growers Association.
Ludmila Catlabuga, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, who was present at the event, stated that the sector’s development depends on the modernization of plantations, increasing added value, and access to advanced technologies and high-yielding varieties from the European Union.
“The walnut sector remains a strategic one for the country’s agricultural economy. The Republic of Moldova exports walnuts worth over $40 million annually, and value-added products—particularly shelled walnuts—represent the segment with the greatest potential for growth,” the minister noted.
According to MAIA, 86% of Moldova’s walnut exports are destined for the EU market, with the country ranking among the top five suppliers to EU member states. The main destinations are Germany, France, Romania, and the Netherlands.
The Moldovan Walnut Growers Association was founded in 2006 and currently has 129 active members, working with over 350 producers across the country.
