The integration of children with disabilities, especially those with severe mental disabilities, into the national education system does not always occur according to the expectations of parents or as the teaching staff would wish, acknowledges Minister Dan Perciun. He asserts that discussions are needed to identify solutions to this “not at all easy” problem, reports IPN.
The Minister emphasizes that, through the decision to integrate children with special educational needs into mainstream schools, “an important step forward has been made”, however, the educational system still fails to provide them with the necessary support.
“Integration must be real and not just on paper. By the end of the year, we will propose several intervention options that can be implemented,” stated Dan Perciun.
The decisions will be preceded by public consultations, intended “to reduce the pressure on the system, to hear the opinions of teachers and, at the same time, to meet the expectations of parents,” added the minister.
The official expressed hope that the implemented solutions, even if they will not be supported by everyone, will be accepted by the majority of those targeted.
