The Minister of Defense, Anatolie Nosatii, maintains that when he took over the leadership of the institution, the army was underfunded and poorly equipped, but in recent years significant steps have been taken towards its modernization and strengthening. The statement was made at the Parliament session, where today the simple motion submitted by the opposition against the policies promoted in the field of national defense and the assurance of military security is being debated, reports IPN.

The motion also targets cases of death among military personnel and measures adopted by authorities to prevent such tragedies.

“You have summoned me through a motion to address one of the most painful subjects – the death among conscript and contract soldiers. From the main forum of the country, I want to convey my entire compassion to the families of the soldiers. Respect for the life of soldiers is a constant priority. Every life lost represents a tragedy, a tragedy for our system as well. The institutions analyze each case with utmost responsibility”, mentioned Minister Nosatii.

The official stated that he will personally monitor the intensification of psychological support activities for the military and will strengthen collaboration with competent institutions to prevent such cases.

According to the data presented by the minister in Parliament, between 1996 and 2026, 113 deaths were recorded among the soldiers of the National Army. Out of these, 27 were cases of suicide: 10 among contract soldiers, of which three occurred during service, and 17 among conscript soldiers, of which 11 occurred during service. The remaining 86 deaths were caused by illnesses or accidents.
