Mayor of Condrița village: Gas will be 9 lei

The mayor of Condrița village of Chisinau municipality Andrei Donica issued an order in protest. Under the order, the people from the village will pay a smaller charge for natural gas. In a news conference hosted by IPN, the mayor said the decision has a retroactive effect, which is compensatory payments will be offered for the natural gas supplied as from June 7, 2023, including for liquefied petroleum gas bought in cylinders, which is used by many locals, IPN reports.

Andrei Donica noted that the order to make compensatory payments for natural gas in Condrița village was issued on October 2. “I want to tell you that we will compensate the people for the used gas not starting with yesterday. The order has a retroactive effect and covers the period since the gas price was modified the last time, which is on June 7, 2023, when the NAER changed the price and decreased it from 29 lei to 18 lei. All the inhabitants of Condrița, who will file an application to get compensated for gas as from June 7, 2023, will annex the gas bills to the application and the mayor’s office will calculate the whole sum that will be paid retroactively,” stated Andrei Donica.

The mayor noted that to benefit from the compensatory payment, the inhabitants should submit an application to the mayor’s office. This is the only solution by which he can help the locals when the central authorities don’t do it. “They complain that they don’t have money to support the citizens, including to allocate funds for compensating the people for the consumed energy resources. In fact, I want to show that there is money in the country and there is money even in a village like Condrița, which has a small budget against the budgets of all the suburban settlements of Chisinau. We found financial resources to pay compensation for gas,” said Andrei Donica.

He went on to say that the gas charges should have been modified earlier, but the government didn’t do this and he decided to issue the order in protest. “We saw this political game and saw that the gas charge was reduced by only 11 lei, on June 7, 2023. In fact, the charge should be much lower. I consider the gas charge should be at most 9 lei,” stated the mayor.

Moldova has no more time to lose, and every day of delay in adopting reforms means young people leaving the country and missed investments. The statement was made by the designated Prime Minister, Vasile Tofan, from the Parliament’s podium before the plenary vote. Vasile Tofan advocated for budgetary discipline, supporting the business environment, rethinking state controls and a salary system based on performance and transparency, reports IPN.

Vasile Tofan stated that the future Government must answer a fundamental question: whether Moldova can become a country where young people choose to stay, to start families and to invest. “The problems are serious, and decisions can no longer be postponed. The action counter is not in years, but in days and hours. Each delay has a real cost”, declared the appointed prime minister.

He further drew attention to the budget deficit of approximately 20 billion lei and the imbalances in the pension system, arguing that the state needs to stimulate economic growth, not just redistribute available resources.

The designated Prime Minister has also promised a change in the way company inspections are conducted. “A business that operates correctly should not be repeatedly inspected just because it is visible and easy to find. In a typical tax dispute, the state should not come with masked men at 6 in the morning over an entrepreneur in front of his children and family. Unfortunately, such things happen”, the designated Prime Minister pointed out.

On the international front, Vasile Tofan reiterated support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and stated that accession to the European Union must be supported by strengthening the economy and institutions of the Republic of Moldova.

At the same time, he promised a transparent salary system in the public sector, based on responsibility and performance, stating that he will not tolerate non-transparent bonuses and excessive remuneration. “I share people’s outrage about outrageous salaries and I find the cases that have been in the media abusive. If you want a direct answer: I do not tolerate such cases”, Vasile Tofan mentioned.

The Parliament decides today whether to grant the vote of confidence to the cabinet of ministers and the government program proposed by Vasile Tofan.

The man who killed the former Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Andronati, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison. According to law enforcement, he allegedly broke into the victim’s property in the Slobozia district, where he stole money, then killed the owner, reports IPN.

The General Prosecutor’s Office mentions that the court found the defendant guilty of robbery and murder committed with particular cruelty. He is to serve his sentence in a closed-type penitentiary.

According to the PG, the 31-year-old man entered the home of Nicolae Andronati, 90, and allegedly stole 50,000 lei and 5,000 euros. After committing the theft, he allegedly tied up the victim and strangled her.

Before the court, the defendant partially admitted his guilt. He stated that he had performed work in the victim’s household and that a conflict had erupted between the two of them over a debt he claims he could not recover. According to his statements, he later returned to the former dignitary’s residence and killed him.

The court ruled that the victim’s relatives should receive 400 thousand lei as moral damages and over 80 thousand lei as compensation for material damage.

The sentence can be appealed. Until the pronouncement of a final judicial decision, the defendant benefits from the presumption of innocence.
