BBC is facing the most severe staff reductions in the last 15 years, planning to cut up to 2,000 jobs. The news division will be the most affected, bearing the brunt of the cuts across the entire organization, reports IPN citing the publication The Guardian.
Within the news division, layoffs will reach approximately 15%, a higher level than in other departments. This is explained by the fact that a large part of this division’s budget is allocated to employee salaries.
The staff reduction is part of a comprehensive savings plan of approximately 600 million pounds sterling. About 10% of the over 21,000 BBC employees will be affected by these measures.
The BBC management is also considering other cost-cutting measures, such as reorganizing programs and using cheaper production methods. Employees will find out specific details in the coming months, and layoffs will be officially communicated by autumn.
