President Maia Sandu states that the incidents with drones flying over the airspace of the Republic of Moldova represent a real and constant risk, in the context of the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine. The head of state pointed out that the authorities are working on strengthening defense and monitoring capabilities, however, there are no immediate solutions, reports IPN.

“If we do not understand the risks and dangers, we will not be able to protect ourselves. This danger exists and will continue as long as Russia’s war against Ukraine is ongoing. There are no magic solutions,” Maia Sandu declared at the press conference following the National Security Council meeting.

The head of state mentioned that the Government has started investing in radars, defense equipment, and necessary technology for detecting unauthorized objects. In parallel, discussions continue with external partners to obtain additional technology intended for the protection of airspace.

“It is not enough just to detect. It is important that we can protect our citizens. The safety of people is our main concern,” stressed the president, also condemning Russia’s attitude towards violations of Moldova’s and other European countries’ airspace.

The President was also asked about the case of the truck with smuggled weapons discovered at the Leuseni Customs. According to her, the phenomenon was predictable in the context of the border war. “It’s a big problem, one we will continue to face. The risks are high,” Maia Sandu affirmed.
