The court hearing in the case where Ion Creanga, former head of the Legal Department of the Parliament, is accused of treason, was postponed again, the defendant claiming that he feels sick after a recent medical intervention. The information was confirmed for IPN by the spokesperson of the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases, Emil Gaitur.

Contacted by the agency, Ion Creanga’s lawyer, Gheorghe Ionas, specified that today the extension request for the preventive measure, the one for provisional release under judicial control, was examined. A decision in this regard will be pronounced by the court at the session set for November 19.

Ion Creanga is accused of treason and conspiracy against the state. According to the investigation, during the period 2023-2024, he allegedly maintained correspondence and clandestine meetings with an assistant to the military attaché of the Russian Federation Embassy in Chisinau. The former head of the Legal Department of the Parliament was arrested in July 2024, when he allegedly received 500 dollars from a Russian official. Subsequently, he was released from isolation and placed under house arrest, after almost a year of preventive detention.

According to the Penal Code, the crime of treason is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Ion Creanga pleads not guilty.
