Farmers from several districts are protesting as Parliament debates a bill to extend the licensing mechanism for grain and oilseed imports. The farmers are calling for the bill to be passed in two readings, IPN reports.
They are also calling for legislative amendments that would allow the Government to extend the mechanism without requiring Parliament to intervene each time. The farmers also said they were facing other problems. According to them, the Government is ignoring their requests for diesel excise duty refunds for micro, small and medium-sized farms, direct payments per hectare for sugar beet growers in 2026, direct payments for micro, small and medium-sized cereal and oilseed growers from 2027, and the abolition of the reverse-charge VAT mechanism in agriculture.
At its meeting on Wednesday, the government approved a bill requiring licences for imports of wheat, maize and sunflower seeds until 31 December. To enter into force, the bill must be passed by Parliament in two readings.
The current import licensing mechanism expires on October 31. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, an extension is needed amid falling import prices for sunflower seeds and logistical difficulties in the Black Sea region, which are hampering exports of Moldovan agricultural products.
