Joining the European Union represents the best guarantee for the rights of all citizens, regardless of ethnicity or language, as it will bring strong institutions and equal opportunities. The statement belongs to President Maia Sandu and was made during a meeting with the OSCE High Commissioner for National Minorities, Christophe Kamp, who is on a visit to the Republic of Moldova, reports IPN.

The head of state mentioned that the protection of ethnic minorities’ rights and the strengthening of social cohesion remain priorities for the state. In this context, Maia Sandu highlighted the progress made in the past year in the field of multilingual education and social inclusion, achieved in cooperation with the High Commissioner’s Office.

During the meeting, the two also discussed the situation in UTA Gagauzia. The President emphasized the importance of organizing free and fair elections in the autonomous region, as well as the need to ensure a healthy informational environment. At the same time, Maia Sandu stated that the reform of local public administration does not affect the special status of Gagauzia, guaranteed by the Constitution. Also, the head of state specified that the specifics of the Taraclia district will be respected.

At the end of the meeting, the officials reaffirmed their commitment to continue cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the High Commissioner’s Office of the OSCE for national minorities.
