U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an order that would require voters to prove that they are U.S. citizens in order to vote, IPN reports.

„We have to solve the problem of our elections. The state is so ‘sick’ because of sham elections, and we have to fix that one way or another,” Trump said.

The order requires proof of U.S. citizenship, such as passports or driver’s licenses, at the voter registration stage.

The White House noted that the order would prevent foreign nationals from getting involved in the U.S. electoral process. Under the new rules, voters for the first time will be asked a question about citizenship on the federal voting form.

At the same time, through the new order, the White House leader would try to prevent states from counting mail-in ballots received after Election Day and from obtaining federal funding from states that do not comply.

The order requires the secretary of homeland security to ensure that states have access to systems that verify the citizenship or immigration status of people who register to vote. It also asks the Department of Homeland Security and an administrator from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to review voter registration lists to ensure they are consistent with federal requirements.

Under U.S. law, only U.S. citizens are allowed to participate in federal elections, but not all states require such documents to vote, and some states use other methods to verify the identity of voters.
