Eight people are suspected of blackmail and extortion, after allegedly obtaining, through threats, over 47,000 euros from two victims. According to law enforcement, the suspects allegedly demanded the money under the pretext that they could block or disrupt their activity on social networks. One of the targeted individuals has already been detained, reports IPN.
According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, the group was composed of three women and five men aged between 18 and 47, originating from Chisinau and Orhei. The first blackmail actions took place in April-May 2021, when the suspects used a fake Instagram profile to ask for money. The threats escalated in May 2025, when at the gate of the parents of one of the victims, from the Causeni district, a coffin lid, a metallic cross with the birth date and a supposed death date, and a photograph of the victim and her minor daughter were left.
The money was transferred to bank accounts and electronic wallets, then withdrawn in cash. As part of the investigation, ten searches were conducted, with the support of the BPDS “Fulger”. Law enforcement officers seized mobile phones, storage devices, bank cards and a BMW car.
If the guilt of the suspects is proven, they risk between 11 and 13 years of imprisonment. The investigation continues to identify other involved persons.
