The Ministry of Education and Research launches the Decade of Memory and Gratitude, occasioned by the commemoration, on March 2, of the heroes fallen for the independence of the Republic of Moldova during the combat actions at Nistru in 1992. The activities will begin with a scientific conference, organized on March 2, which will bring together the historical community, teachers, representatives of the education departments and the Government, reports IPN.
“We discuss the importance of historical memory, about resilience, about how we unite around those critical events that our society has gone through, how we use and transmit these messages in society, especially to the younger generations,” declared the Minister of Education, Dan Perciun, specifying that the aim is to prevent the spread of false narratives and strengthen the unity of society.
Throughout the month of March, schools will organize various activities dedicated to the Nistru war and will address topics related to family and distance. Historians from the Institute of History at the State University of Moldova will travel to each district to participate in meetings with students. “At the same time, we will have groups of students, around 1,000, who will come to Chisinau and will have the opportunity to spend a day visiting the Army Museum, and later to watch a show on these topics,” pointed out Dan Perciun.
The Minister highlighted an attempt to commemorate the events “on a different scale and with a different level of involvement” compared to previous years. “Let us remember what we have been through, let us remember our ability to resist in the face of dictatorship, in the face of attempts to steal our freedom. Let us commemorate the heroes and look to the future, inspired by the example of those who fought for the independence of the Republic of Moldova,” said the Minister of Education.
The Day of Memory and Gratitude, marked on March 2nd, was established by a decision of the Parliament in 2021. Every year, authorities lay flowers and participate in a march and a commemorative meeting for those who sacrificed their lives for the independence and sovereignty of the country.
