The modernization plans for Mărculești International Airport, which the authorities aim to transform into a viable platform for passenger and cargo air transport, were discussed on Friday, during a working visit made by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu. The head of state met with the airport administration and technical team, as well as with the inhabitants of the city of Mărculești and the nearby villages. She expressed her confidence that the modernization of the airport infrastructure will bring economic development opportunities and will create new jobs for the entire northern region of the country, reports IPN.
The modernization of the Mărculești Airport will be carried out with the support of the Chișinău International Airport, in accordance with a law recently adopted by Parliament. According to Maia Sandu, the locals support the project. “I spoke with the city’s residents and those from nearby villages and was pleased to see support for this initiative,” emphasized the president.
In the context of the false information that has recently emerged, the head of state wanted to clarify that it is a civil airport.
The airport has a 2500-meter runway, internationally certified, with a load-bearing capacity that allows the operation of large aircraft. With investments in airport infrastructure and safety and security systems, the Mărculești airport can become a strategic logistics hub for the north of the country, authorities assert.
Maia Sandu also mentioned that many of the ongoing projects at the national level are supported by development partners, emphasizing the importance of external cooperation. “It is essential to stay close to our friends from the large European family,” the head of state highlighted. In the town of Mărculești, for example, through the “European Village” program, the public street lighting system was modernized, and currently, the roof of the cultural house is being repaired.
