The Moldovans have democratically decided that the country’s future lies in Europe, and the European Union is here to support them every step of the way. The statement was made by the President of the European Council, António Costa, during a press conference held after the first bilateral summit between Moldova and the European Union, which took place on Friday in Chisinau, according to IPN.
António Costa mentioned that the accession process is not a simple exercise in ticking boxes, but requires sustained efforts and reforms that will bring tangible results for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. According to the official, these efforts open up more opportunities for citizens and are beneficial for closer cooperation. These benefits are already visible on the ground, in people’s daily lives – through visa liberalization, the elimination of roaming charges, investments in infrastructure, and support for energy systems.
“During today’s discussions, we agreed to continue working to further accelerate the process of integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European Union’s single market, to stimulate growth, to support the country’s business environment, to create new jobs, and to improve living standards,” said the President of the European Council.
“We will remain partners in strengthening the security and resilience of the Republic of Moldova, as these are key aspects of our support,” says António Costa.
The summit was held behind closed doors. The European Union was represented at the event by the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The event was organized under the auspices of President Maia Sandu.
Among the main topics of the summit were Moldova’s accession process to the European Union, European support in the context of the war in Ukraine, and the implementation of the Growth Plan for Moldova. Other topics discussed included strengthening trade relations, cooperation in the field of security and defense, energy transition, digital transformation, and facilitating contacts between citizens.
