A delegation from the European Commission is expected in Budapest on Friday for discussions with the leader of the Tisza party, Péter Magyar, the winner of last Sunday’s parliamentary elections. A spokesperson for the European executive clarified that the agenda includes critical issues, such as unlocking European funds and the loan intended for Ukraine, reports IPN.
He added that the visit is a direct consequence of President Ursula von der Leyen’s announcement regarding the desire to collaborate quickly with the future Hungarian government. Although he acknowledged the unusual nature of official discussions with representatives of parties before they take over governmental roles, the Commission’s spokesperson explained that the measure aims to prevent wasting time on critical files.
At the same time, the European official mentioned that the discussions could also include topics related to the future Hungarian government’s stance on Russian energy and media freedom.
