The heads of state and government of the North Atlantic Alliance countries approved, during the summit in The Hague, an increase in defense spending and reaffirmed their commitment to mutual defense in case of attacks, reports IPN.
During a press conference, the Romanian president Nicușor Dan reaffirmed his support for Ukraine in the war, stating that it “is linked to the security of the entire eastern flank of NATO”. At the same time, the leader from Cotroceni drew attention to the importance of the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova, which will take place on September 28.
“The summit concluded with a declaration containing four main points. Firstly, it reaffirms transatlantic unity, thus, implicitly, a continuation of American presence in Europe. Then, the most discussed point in the months prior to the summit, the increase in financial contribution, specifically, this target of 5% of GDP by 2035,” declared the President of Romania, Nicusor Dan.
According to the head of the Romanian state, the third point is that “this money must be transformed into military capabilities and a commitment of the member states to collaborate for this”. In this context, Nicusor Dan mentioned that Romania has made the clarification that “within these European Union financing mechanisms, we want NATO allies, who are not EU members, to be able to participate”.
The fourth point, upheld by NATO leaders, is the reaffirmation of support for Ukraine in the face of Russian military aggression.
