The Palestinian group Hamas announced on Monday the dissolution of the Emergency Government Committee, the body that has managed the Gaza Strip for nearly 20 years. Hamas has led the enclave since 2007, when it forcibly took control from the rival Fatah movement, reports IPN.

According to Hamas, the head of the Government Emergency Committee, Mohammed al-Farra, has officially resigned and dissolved the institution to facilitate the transfer of administrative duties to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (CNAG), made up of technocrats. The group claims it is ready to relinquish governance responsibilities to allow the new body to begin its work, writes Euronews.

CNAG was established by the Council for Peace, instituted by the American president Donald Trump following the armistice between Hamas and Israel, concluded in October 2025. The committee is led by the Palestinian technocrat Ali Shaath, however, it could not begin its activity in Gaza, due to objections raised by Israel regarding its access to the territory.

The announcement comes after several rounds of negotiations held in Cairo between Hamas, other Palestinian factions, and international mediators. The first stage of the truce led to the release of the last Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees, but negotiations for the second stage, which involves the disarmament of Hamas, are stalled. The group conditions the surrender of weapons on the establishment of a Palestinian administration, while Israel rejects both the return of Hamas to power and the direct takeover of control by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.

Meteorologists have issued a yellow heatwave warning for this weekend. In most parts of the country, the maximum temperatures will reach +34 degrees Celsius, reports IPN.

The warning is valid for the center, south, and east of the country. Several districts in the north are also under the yellow code. The northernmost districts of the country such as Briceni, Ocnita, Edinet, Drochia, Soroca, Glodeni, Rascani, and Donduseni – are not affected by the warning.

According to the Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, the warning can be updated depending on the evolution of weather phenomena.

During periods of heatwave, authorities recommend people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours, to consume enough fluids, and to pay increased attention to children, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions.
