Under 22 and 23 athletes to be honoured for international performances

Moldovan athletes who achieve results at international competitions in the Under-22 and Under-23 age categories will be honoured from the state budget. In order to cover the payments, the government has approved the addition to the financial rules on sports activity, IPN reports.

Athletes aged between 17 and 23 taking part in Olympic or non-Olympic events, as well as their coaches, will benefit from official recognition of their performances.

Until now, Moldovan athletes in the U-21, U-22 and U-23 categories were honoured by analogy with youth athletes, which did not correctly reflect the importance of these competitions in the international structure. With the amendment, clear rules are established for rewarding the results obtained, depending on the age category and the importance of the competition.

The measure allows the Ministry of Education and Research to award prizes in cash or artefacts, depending on the value of the performance and within the limits of the available budget, at the request of national sports federations.

According to the authorities, this decision recognises the efforts of Moldovan athletes who succeed in international competitions in the intermediate age categories, thus ensuring fair treatment in the award system and encouraging the continuity of sports performance.

The Republic of Moldova has won three medals and two honorable mentions at the International Mathematics Olympiad. The national team earned a silver medal and two bronze medals during the competition held from July 9 to 21 in Shanghai, China, reports IPN.

The silver medal was won by Alin Popescu. The bronze medals were obtained by Marius Cerlat and Alexandr Ivanicichin, while the honorable mentions went to Anastasia Corsac and Vladislav Smochina. All five students study at the “Orizont” Theoretical High School in Durlesti, Chisinau municipality.

The competition was attended by 666 students from 117 countries. The Republic of Moldova was represented by six students and two teachers. The team was led by Valeriu Gutu, a doctor in physical-mathematical sciences and associate professor at the State University of Moldova, and the deputy leader was Evghenii Cuznetov, a doctor in physical-mathematical sciences, researcher at the “Vladimir Andrunachievici” Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the State University of Moldova.

The Ministry of Education and Research has sent congratulations to the awarded students, their teachers and parents. At the same time, the institution expressed gratitude to the members of the Republican Olympic Council in Mathematics for their involvement in preparing the national team.
